Sapphires are one of the most popular colored stones. Sapphires are made of corundum. The type and amount of metallic oxide in the stone determines the color. Sapphires come in every color except red.  A blue sapphire is the most valued color and is also called “cornflower” blue. The rarest sapphire, “padparadschas” (lotus flower) are orange-pink or pinkish-orange in color and is the only sapphire to have its own name.

Every sapphire comes with its own unique “birthmarks”. Sapphire inclusion, called silk (fine needle-like inclusions), may add value to the stone, and furnishes proof to its natural origin. Sapphires are durable gemstones and excel in hardness (9 Mohs scale). Its toughness and stability makes it an ideal gemstone to be used in jewelry that is worn every day.

Sapphires are stones of wisdom and serenity. They are thought to relieve mental tension and dispel depression, to align the physical, mental, and spiritual planes and restore balance within the body.  Sapphires are also associated with romance, fidelity and undying devotion and thought to facilitate creativity and self-expression.

As a jewelry gemstone, a sapphire is versatile. Blue sapphires can be traditional or modern. Currently it is an extremely popular gemstone to grace engagement rings.  A gift of sapphire jewelry indicates deep devotion and often becomes a family heirloom to be treasured for generations. Sapphires are the birthstone for September and the gemstone for commemorating a 45th wedding anniversary.
